Lip Injections: Expectations vs. Reality

Posted July 19, 2017 in Lip Augmentation

While the trend certainly didn’t start with the Kardashian/Jenner clan, when Kylie Jenner revealed her much larger lips seemingly overnight, most of us were in awe. When it came out that her luscious lips were the result of lip injections, nobody was really surprised. While makeup tricks are good, they aren’t THAT good.

Since the buzz surrounding Kylie’s lips, more and more women are considering whether lip injections can help them achieve the look they want. If you are like many who feel that their thin lips don’t balance their features, then soft tissue fillers may be the avenue for you. However, there are a few misconceptions about lip injections that you should educate yourself on before undergoing treatment.

Your Lips Don’t Grow Overnight

While the Kylie Jenner craze seemed to happen overnight, her lip plumping certainly didn’t. When you look back at her photos, you can see the progression. You will see a noticeable improvement in the size of your lips after just one treatment, and most people are pleased after one or two treatments. Depending on your goals, you may need multiple treatments to achieve the complete size, shape, or definition you desire. Soft tissue fillers build upon themselves. This means that if you have thin lips or lack an upper lip completely, you will need to slowly build fillers over several months before you see the results you want. It’s always easier to add more filler if you like the look than it is to take it away if you have put too much in at once.

Lip Injections Have a Short Life

The traditional teaching is that lip fillers provide volume for nine to 12 months. However, more practically, the fillers last about six months for most people, and some people will see the effects for up to nine months. The lips are very mobile and vascular, so the filler doesn’t tend to last as long here as it does in other places. If you get the next injections before the filler has completely gone away, you generally don’t need to use as much filler and it can last longer. Once you stop getting repeat treatments, your lips will go back to how they would look without fillers. They will not instantly “deflate” like some people fear; they simply dissolve slowly and go back to the way they were before. Just like we maintain our hair and nails, it is a continuous investment to maintain full, pouty lips with injections.

Professional Injectors Matter

The results that make people cringe or anxious when you say “lip filler” is often from over-injection and/or incorrect placement. Who you choose for injector does matter. The person performing your lip injections should be a trained injector who has experience with facial enhancement procedures. You want someone who will create a beautifully balanced look that also appears natural.

Know Your Options

While lip injections are the easiest treatment and most often featured on social media, they aren’t the only option available to help you achieve a better-looking smile. Dermal grafts provide results that last for five years or more. Lip lift or lip advancement surgery may be ideal for women who aren’t good candidates for lip injections. A facial plastic surgeon can help you decide which option is best for you.

Nothing is ever a one-size-fits-all procedure when it comes to beauty. It is important to have a consultation before deciding on any facial enhancement procedure.
